Biochar Kiln Loan Program

Our Biochar Kiln Loan Program is available to everyone!  If you are a farmer, gardener, or land steward, read more below or contact us to learn more about biochar and our kiln loan program.

Do you have woody debris or other types of feedstock available? Turn your debris into biochar, a valuable resource to build soil nutrients and structure. Working Landscapes Biochar Loan program allows you to rent a kiln free of charge and make your own biochar.

We have two types of kilns available:

The Oregon kiln is good for small—to medium-sized producers and makes up to 1.4 cubic yards of biochar in about 4 hours. For one burn, you will need approximately 3-4 cubic yards of feedstock.

The Ring of Fire kiln is a good option if you want to produce larger amounts of biochar or if multiple farms want to collaborate on a bigger burn.

To Rent a Kiln:

  1. Gather woody materials together and ensure they are dry. Make sure your feedstock is 3 inches in diameter or less. If you have questions about this process, email Jason@workinglandscapes.org.
  2. Fill out our interest form here.
  3. A staff member will contact you to follow up about the next steps and let you know when the next kiln is available. You will be able to pick the kiln up in downtown Warrenton.
  4. Make biochar (see the video below to learn about using a kiln).
  5. When you are finished with the kiln, contact jason@workinglandscapesnc.org to coordinate the return.
